PURPOSE OF THIS WEBSITE

Although this website claims no Halachic authority of its own it bases itself upon the Gedolei Haposkim as they are recorded in their Seforim.  The plan to set up this site was conceived by the undersigned to reach those who can be convinced with logical Halachic arguments; secondly to show members of Kehillos whose Rabbonim forbade reliance upon the Eruv that their ruling is backed by great Halachic authorities. The site was set up with strong encouragement of local Talmidei Chachomim and quotes great Poskim in support of its position. It does claim to express the Halachic viewpoint of many Talmidei Chachomim who have looked into the issues involved, in particular those abroad who have specialized for years in Hilchos Eruvin; and to give credence to the strong stand taken by senior local Rabbonim.

It is regrettable yet unavoidable that this may cast a negative light upon an otherwise highly respected Beth Din. Although an authority declaring a problematic Eruv as mehudar and thereby causing others to carry when they should not cannot claim protection of its Kavod; unfortunately the authority itself is the cause of the need to criticize and inform the public not to carry. Nevertheless such negative light is not intended and should in no way be taken beyond the realm of Eruvin.

The sole purpose and indeed the sole justification of this site is the furtherance of Shmiras Shabbos by affording the individual a better informed choice. Indeed this purpose has been fulfilled in many cases.

[In no way do the Talmidei Chachomim who encouraged the setting up of this website mean to condone the use of the Internet. They are simply cognizant of the fact that many people have access to it in their offices. It is to be hoped that effective guards are installed and that the user’s eye will never meet more problematic pictures than those of an Eruv. ]

No authority could accuse this site of causing disunity if

a) They went against the express wishes of a senior Av Beis Din who asked them respectfully to desist – inter alia for the sake of unity. [See relevant letter reproduced on this site.]

b) They went over the heads of the clear majority of local Rabbonim. [See relevant letter reproduced on this site.]

c) Above all: If they constructed an Eruv with major Halachic problems yet declare it 100% valid with “full confidence in its Halachic integrity”.

Absence of an Eruv would be safe; construction of a problematic Eruv is unsafe for Shabbos. Surely the authority itself should opt for the safer way and the way of unity. Failing that the others have no option but to inform the individual about the problems in a way which reaches him.

If your Rov expressly allowed reliance on the Eruv then this website is not for you.  Thank you for your visit and good bye!
